Start with a basic search on the New York Times website to find current items about your subject.

Use the site operator [for example - nytimes.com: immigration ] to quickly locate your subject on the New York Times (or any other) website.

Search in OneSearch, CUNY's Discovery Tool 

Once you have identified some Subject Terms to go with your main subject, plug that information into OneSearch.
