Journal Clubs in Academic and Clinical Medicine

Journal clubs (JC) serve many purposes in medical education and clinical medicine, one of which is to support the development of critical appraisal skills, a key attribute in a competent physician. Other purposes include: staying current in the field, acquiring good searching skills to identify best evidence, and promote the transfer of evidence into practice.Figures sitting around a table

At the CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM), there is a monthly journal club meeting where medical education faculty as well as clinical faculty meet to engage in scholarly discussion surrounding a select article. These monthly meetings are run by members of the Faculty Development (FD) team. The FD team makes topic recommendations based on trending themes in the field of academic medicine and specifically at CSOM.

Topic searches for relevant papers are conducted by the school’s medical librarian and then shared with members of the faculty development team. Once a paper has been selected, it is then shared out via email to members of the faculty prior to the JC meeting.

CSOM JC meetings are usually well attended and afford an important space for deep discussions.  Should strong evidence exist on a given topic, the FD team may recommend the formation of a working group to further investigate and make recommendations to review and update school policy.
