There are many citation style guides available.  Some examples include: 


American Chemical Society, ACS Citation Style
American Medical Association, AMA Manual of Style, 10th ed., 2007 (style required by the AIChE Journal)
Chicago Style Manual
Council of Science Editors
Vancouver Style (Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals)

Please consult with your professor/instructor/advisor as to the one you should use for your assignments and papers.

Citation Management Software

Citation management software allows you to easily select, annotate, organize, and output citations in approved-style reference lists.  It also allows you to easily format bibliographies and in-text citations.
