Thousands of streaming video titles with an educational focus are available to the City College community through the CCNY Libraries.
CUNY recently renewed the very large Academic Video Online package. Academic Video Online has a channel-type structure that breaks out its offerings by subjects like American History and Black Studies, genres such as Documentaries and Music & Performing Arts, or providers such as CNN, PBS, and Sony Pictures Classics. The collection is so large that searching broad subjects can return numerous videos but there is also a Highlights blog that lists Editor's Picks each month. Recent additions to the platform include Extreme Airport Engineering, the NOVA documentary from PBS about the $8 billion renovation of LaGuardia Airport and Generation Growth about teacher Stephen Ritz who developed the edible classroom project "The Green Bronx Machine" at CS55 in The Bronx. Academic Video Online has thousands of titles - educational, fictional, and documentary - and it is well worth a browse.
City College has a small collection of titles from the Library streaming service Kanopy. As of Spring 2025, The CCNY Libraries renewed 2 well-viewed “essential” collections from Kanopy. The Criterion Essential Collection which includes 25 must-see classic movies like Breathless and Hoop Dreams and The Kino Lorber Essential Collection which includes the James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro and the ecological documentary Anthropocene:The Human Epoch among others. Kanopy titles are licensed individually and can be requested by faculty for class assignments.
New for Spring 2025! The City College Library has licensed the Digitalia Film Library’s collection of just under 1,000 multilingual films from across the globe. The library of films focuses on titles from Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Titles include Gustavo Giannini's thriller 5-5-5 , Iria Gómez Concheiro's award-winning Asalto al Cine, and Sebastián Silva's comedy-drama La Nana to name a few.
