Josep Gomez Serrano + Jordi Bonet: Selected Bibliography

“An Introduction to Gaudi’s System of Proportions”

Spitzer School of Architecture Lecture – October 2, 2014

About:

Josep Vicent Gomez Serrano Josep Vicent Gomez Serrano is a Spanish architect and a professor of structures in the Architecture Polytechnic University of Catalonia, where he earned his doctorate in architecture in 1978. Gomez has been the Structural Director Architect of the Sagrada Família Temple since 1986. Along with the architectural team, he received an award for their work on the Sagrada Família from the city of Barcelona in 2011. He commissioned the award-winning exhibit Gaudí 2002 that opened that year in Barcelona and which then traveled to a number of locations including Brasil, Naples and Tokyo. He also put together the exhibit, The Architects of Gaudi at the Collegi d'Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC) from December 2002- January 2003.

Jordi Bonet I Armengol, the former head of a team of architects finishing Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, had worked on Gaudí's masterpiece for 40+ years. He holds a Doctor of Architecture degree and has been awarded a number of prizes: the City of Barcelona prize for his building restoration, Comendatore of the "Sanctus Gregorius Magnus Order", the St. George Cross from the Autonomous Government of Catalonia , and the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Domènech I Montaner award for the book The Essential Gaudi. He received the "Alfonso X el Sabio" cross from the Spanish government in 2006. His published works include L'Arquitectura al servei de la Música (1986), Temple de la Sagrada Família (1992), L'Últim Gaudí. The Esencial Gaud&iactue; (2000) and Arquitectura i simbol de la Sagrada Família (2013).

Antoni Gaudi himself was born in Catalonia in 1852. Although influenced by the Gothic revival of the period as well as Art Nouveau, he forged his own unique language of architecture which won him many prestigious and well received commissions such as Park Guell and Casa Mila. He turned his attention solely to “God’s work,” and spent the rest of his life on his church, the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi died in 1926 after being hit by a Barcelona streetcar. He lay in a hospital for the indigent receiving little medical attention before being recognized. Treatment came too late and he died three days later on June 10. His subsequent funeral procession through the streets of Barcelona drew enormous crowds in its wake. His body lies in a crypt in his most famous work, his still-unfinished Sagrada Familia.
