Collaborations are an important part of an academic library that is open to the community. The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library has successfully maintained active relationships with local, national and international organizations, while expanding its direct contacts with the New York City public school system through organizing professional development workshops.

On September 29, 2021, CUNY DSI’s Director Dr. Ramona Hernández, Chief Librarian Sarah Aponte and Librarian Jhensen Ortiz together with the City College of New York School of Education’s Dean Dr. Edwin Lamboy and Professor Jesús Fraga, facilitated a collaborative art-making workshop with MOMA’s K.O.S. (Kids of Survival).

Studio K.O.S. is a collective of New York-based Dominican artists who came together as youth growing up in the South Bronx in the 1980s guided by artist, activist and teacher Tim Rollins.

Educators from the CCNY School of Education joined Studio K.O.S. for a workshop on art making as an emancipatory education practice by combining music and archival resources. During the workshop, participants remade the musical score by French composer Claude Debussy’s “Rêverie” through an art-making activity. They focused on historical documents bearing marks of enslaved and newly freed people in the Americas, drawn from the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute’s First Blacks in the Americas and other archives. Participants created new relationships to canonical works through teaching and art, weaving together their personal histories, cultural heritage, and archival research. Educators gained practical ideas and inspiration for their teaching practice.

The art-making workshop was held via zoom and had live CART captioning and automated Spanish translation. To read more on the Making Your Mark: A Workshop with Studio K.O.S., press here. Press here for the video on MOMA's YouTube channel.

This event was part of MoMA/CUNY Partnership Events.
