Philosophy Day 2019 display in the Cohen Library atrium.

Philosophy Day,  which is happening this Thursday, November 21, is an opportunity for our community to celebrate the pioneering philosophical thinkers, past and present, here at The City College of New York.  Philosophy Department Chair, Ben Vilhauer, will be presenting a talk about “Taking free will skepticism seriously,” in which he considers the beneficial things we do in the name of free will. Professor Vilhauer’s talk will be at 12:30 pm in the North Academic Center, room 5/144, food will be served.  Professor Elise Crull, an expert on the philosophy and history of Science, will discuss “Metaphysics & the Mulitiverse ” at 7 pm in the North Academic Center room 1/201.

The Library will be hosting a Philosophy Day exhibit in the Atrium of the Cohen Library that was created by Archive college assistant Jerry Beersdorf and librarian Sean O'Heir.  The display features profiles of Professors Vilhauer and Crull along with books written by Philosophy Department faculty. Included in the exhibit is a profile of the Library’s namesake, Professor Morris Raphael Cohen, who taught Philosophy at City College from 1912 to 1938. Cohen hosted Albert Einstein during Einstein’s first visit to the United States in April of 1921. You can also see an image of the blackboard Einstein used during that visit.
