Citing Your Sources

Citation is important because it tells your reader where to find your sources, but also because it helps connect your thinking and writing with the intellectual work of others. By correctly citing your sources, you are engaging in an academic conversation!

The tabs below have resources for the three most common citation styles, APA, MLA, and Chicago, along with information on two programs that let you save and manage your sources, along with generate correctly formatted citations. Reference managers are incredibly important for long term projects such as capstones, theses, and dissertations, however they are useful for papers of any length.

RefWorks is a web-based reference management program. This research tool allows you to save an unlimited number of references, full-text, and other research materials, and create both in-text citations and bibliographies.

RefWorks is proprietary software, you must create an account using your CCNY email address, and then link your account to the College.

Zotero is a free and open source web-based reference manager. It is designed to store, manage, and cite bibliographic references, such as books and articles. Zotero is a powerful tool for collecting and organizing research information and sources.

Zotero is free and open source software. You can keep your Zotero account after you leave City College.
