The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute is pleased to announce the release of A History of Dominican Music in the United States, the first open-source digital tool narrating the history of Dominican music as it developed during the past century in the United States. The interactive website, which documents the remarkable legacy of Dominican musicians and their contributions to the cultural life in the United States, is composed of:
The site also includes short clips of individual songs and interviews from as early as 1928 until the present and a comprehensive bibliography that provides a list of references dealing with the history of Dominican music in the United States.
Its rich and varied image archive showcases photographs, flyers, album covers, and newspaper clippings from the collections of the CUNY DSI Archives and Library as well as other collaborating institutions. Many of the images selected reflect the contributions that Dominican musicians have made to the development of Latin music in the U.S. in collaboration with prominent Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians, such as this photograph of Wilfrido Vargas and Willie Colon.
