Librarian Spotlight: Marisol Hernandez

City College’s newest librarian is Marisol Hernandez, Medical Librarian and Associate Professor. Marisol comes to CCNY with 22 years of experience as a Marisol Hernandezmedical librarian, most recently at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was Research Informationist.

Marisol is the first dedicated librarian for the CUNY School of Medicine/The Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program (librarian duties were previously ably handled by Reference Librarian in Science & Engineering and Associate Professor Claudia Lascar), and was drawn to the position by the newness of the medical school and the position. She is looking forward to being able to shape the direction of the position, as well as the opportunity to be fully integrated into the curriculum, and to expand opportunities to teach medical students about the world of resources available to them.

Marisol’s interest in medical librarianship started as a student in library school, where she found her class in health sciences librarianship to be intriguing and engaging. After graduating and working for a few months at the New York Public Library, she applied for and got a job at the Bronx VA Medical Center as an Assistant Biomedical Librarian. The rest, as they say, is history.

Hometown: The Bronx
Favorite place to travel to: Puerto Rico, “the most beautiful island in the world”
Book recommendation: Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart by Alice Walker

We’re excited and fortunate to have Marisol bring her experience and expertise to Sophie Davis and to City College!

If you have medical or health sciences research questions, you can find her on Tuesdays between 9-11 am at the Cohen Library Reference Desk, or at mhernandez8@ccny.cuny.edu.
