All databases (EBSCO and GALE etc...)and discovery tools (OneSearch and Google) offer some kind of rules for searching using algebraic concepts and,or, & not - also known as Boolean operators.

If you are searching a broad subject such as (substance abuse) in EBSCO databases, you can add proximity rules. This is fairly advanced and is not necessary for most searches.
